Diesel prices hit a record new high in four metros across the country on Thursday. Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) marginally increased the prices of both petrol and diesel today. The Indian rupee today fell further by 23 paise against the US dollar to trade at a lifetime low of 70.82, reported news agency Press Trust of India (PTI). The free fall of Indian currency continued today on strong month-end demand for the US currency amid sustained foreign fund outflows. At the Interbank Foreign Exchange (Forex) market, the local currency opened a tad higher at 70.57 a dollar from its previous close of 70.59 but slipped to hit a new low of 70.82, down by 23 paise, PTI added.

Over 99 per cent of Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 notes banned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the November 2016 demonetisation have returned to the banking system, the Reserve Bank of India said today after completing what it calls the "humungous task" of counting the banned cash. The central bank's annual report says only a fraction of the currency was left out of the system after the unprecedented notes ban aimed at checking black money and corruption - an exercise that cost the government Rs. 8,000 crore. The opposition Congress promptly said the PM must "apologise" for lying to the nation.

House Arrest For 5 Activists Till September 6, Says Top Court

The Maharashtra government must file a response to the petition challenging the arrest of five activists by the Pune police on terror charges, the Supreme Court said today. For now, they will be kept under house arrest till September 6, said a five-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra. The police contend the activists -- Varavara Rao, Sudha Bharadwaj, Arun Fereira, Gautam Navlakha and Vernon Gonsalves -- are linked to Maoists and were planning to recruit members from 35 colleges and launch attacks. The petitioners, including historian Romila Thapar, want the arrests to be put on hold and an independent probe into the matter.

Rupee Collapses To Lifetime Low

The Indian rupee collapsed to a lifetime low of 70.52 by plunging 42 paise against the US dollar on strong month-end demand for the American currency amid foreign fund outflows, reported news agency Press Trust of India (PTI). The Indian currency was hurt by fresh demand for the American currency from importers, mainly oil refiners, following higher crude oil prices. Dollar's strength against some currencies overseas also weighed on the domestic unit today. In sweeping raids across six cities, at least five activists with alleged Maoist links were arrested today by the Pune police. The arrests were in connection with Koregaon Bhima violence in January this year, in which Dalit activists had clashed with upper-caste Marathas, the police said. डॉ. नरेंद्र दाभोलकर, गोविंद पांसरे, एमएम कलबुर्गी और गौरी लंकेश.. ये वो नाम हैं जो कट्‌टरपंथियों का शिकार बने और जिनकी हत्या की जांच अभी चल ही रही है. ये जांच जैसे-जैसे आगे बढ़ रही है और आरोपियों की गिरफ़्तारी हो रही है, ये शक़ गहरा होता जा रहा है कि कहीं ना कहीं कुछ हिंदू कट्टरपंथी संगठन इन हत्याओं के पीछे हैं. ऐसे ही संगठनों में हैं सनातन संस्था और हिंदू जनजागृति जिन पर पिछले कुछ समय में ये आरोप गाढ़े हो गए हैं. हिंदू राष्ट्र बनाने की पक्षधर ये संस्थाएं अब इन आरोपों का जवाब देने सामने आईं हैं. सोमवार को उन्होंने कहा कि हत्याओं से उनका कोई लेना देना नहीं है और उन्हें जानबूझकर बदनाम करने की कोशिश की जा रही है.

मध्यप्रदेश में विधानसभा चुनाव से पहले आदिवासी वोटरों जयस जैसे संगठनों के असर से बचाने के लिए शिवराज चौहान सरकार ने तेंदूपत्ता जमा करने वाले लोगों को सरकारी जूते-चप्पल बांटे, साड़ियां बांटी, लेकिन ये मुफ़्त की सौगात सरकार के लिए ही आफ़त बन सकती है. केंद्रीय चर्म अनुसंधान संस्थान की रिपोर्ट कहती है कि सरकार की ओर से बांटे गए जूतों में ख़तरनाक एज़ो डाई का इस्तेमाल किया गया है, जिससे कैंसर होने की आशंका रहती है. एनडीटीवी के पास इस रिपोर्ट की एक्सक्लूसिव कॉपी है. कैंसर की आशंका की बात सामने आने के बाद से लोग सरकार के दिए जूते-चप्पल पहनने से बच रहे हैं.

हर दिन सोचता हूं कि अब नौकरी सीरीज़ बंद कर दें. क्योंकि देश भर में चयन आयोग किसी गिरोह की तरह काम कर रहे हैं. उन्होंने नौजवानों को इस कदर लूटा है कि आफ चाह कर भी सबकी कहानी नहीं दिखा सकते हैं. नौजवानों से फॉर्म भरने कई करोड़ लिए जाते हैं, मगर परीक्षा का पता ही नहीं चलता है. देश में कोई भी खबर होती है, ये नौजवान दिन रात अपनी नौकरी को लेकर ही मैसेज करते रहते हैं. मेरी नौकरी, मेरी परीक्षा का कब दिखाएंगे. परीक्षा देकर नौजवान एक साल से लेकर तीन साल तक इंतज़ार कर रहे हैं तो कई बार फॉर्म भरने के बाद चार तक परीक्षा का पता ही नहीं चलता है. यह सीरीज़ इसलिए बंद करना ज़रूरी है क्योंकि समस्या विकराल हो चुकी है. जब भी बंद करने की सोचता हूं किसी नौजवान की कहानी सुनकर कांप जाता हूं. तब लगता है कि आज एक और बार के लिए दिखा देते हैं और फिर सीरीज़ बंद नहीं कर पाता.

पर्यावरण को बचाने और हरा-भरा भारत बनाने की मुहिम के तहत एनडीटीवी के 'ग्रीनाथॉन' से स्पाइस जेट के चेयरमैन अजय सिंह जुड़े. स्पाइस जेट के चेयरमैन अजय सिंह ने कहा कि एयरलाइंस सबसे बड़े प्रदूषक हैं. ग्लोबल वायु प्रदूषण में एविएशन इंडस्ट्री का हिस्सा 2 फीसदी है. किसी एक सेक्टर के लिए यह बहुत ज्यादा है. आईएटीए ने कुछ सख्त लक्ष्य तय किए हैं. हर साल 1.5 फीसदी एमिशन घटाने का लक्ष्य रखा गया है. लक्ष्य बहुत बड़ा है, लेकिन हम अच्छे ग्लोबल नागरिक होने की कोशिश में हैं. बता दें कि स्पाइस जेट का बायो फ़्यूल विमान देहरादून से उड़ान भरकर दिल्ली पहुंचा है. दिल्ली एयरपोर्ट पर चार केंद्रीय मंत्रियों की मौजूदगी में पानी की बौछारों से विमान का स्वागत हुआ. ये भारत का पहला बायो फ़्यूल विमान है. इससे उड़ान की लागत में 20 फ़ीसदी तक की कमी आएगी और प्रदूषण में भी कमी होगी.

RSS पिछले कुछ समय से कांग्रेस अध्यक्ष राहुल गांधी के निशाने पर रहा है. हाल ही के दिनों में राहुल गांधी सीधे आरएसएस का नाम ले उसपर देश को बांटने का आरोप लगाते रहे हैं. इस बीच RSS अगले महीने होने वाले अपने एक कार्यक्रम के लिए कांग्रेस अध्यक्ष राहुल गांधी और लेफ्ट नेता सीताराम येचुरी को निमंत्रण भेजने की तैयारी कर रहा है. आरएसएस का ये कार्यक्रम अगले महीने 17 से 19 सितंबर तक चलेगा. इसमें 'भविष्य का भारत' कार्यक्रम के तहत राहुल और येचुरी समेत अन्य राजनीतिक दलों को RSS न्योता भेजेगा. RSS प्रचारक अरुण कुमार का कहना है कि इस बैठक में समाज के हर क्षेत्र के लोगों को बुलाया जाएगा.
