11 Dead In Gas Leak Tragedy In Punjab's Ludhiana

 11 people have died after they fell unconscious due to a gas leak incident at a factory in the Giaspura area of Ludhiana in Punjab. Four more people, who were taken ill, are undergoing treatment at a hospital, police said. A rescue team was rushed to the spot, and doctors, an ambulance, and a fire brigade team have also been stationed at the spot. A 50-member team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has also reached the site. The affected area has been cordoned off.

MediaTek Shifts Focus to Cars, AI Amid Supply Glut in Smartphone Market

Taiwan's top chip design company MediaTek is focusing more resources on chips for cars and AI computing as its smartphone clients face a supply glut and inflation and macroeconomic uncertainty dent demand for consumer electronics.

"We are definitely moving our resources very, very rapidly towards the automotive and computing areas, because those areas will provide our growth in the next three to five years," MediaTek Chief Executive Rick Tsai told an earnings call.

"In this very demanding environment, we are not reducing people. We're not increasing either. The critical thing is to allocate those precious resources," he said.

Tsai said everyone, including MediaTek, was rushing to claim that they were able to support generative artificial intelligence, such as ChatGPT.

"We're confident that we will be able to provide the capability to our customers," Tsai said.

MediaTek is investing heavily in AI because the new areas the company is focusing on are all related to computing, Tsai said. The development of autonomous vehicles, for instance, requires AI chips.

While smartphone demand has remained lacklustre in the first quarter, the company expects signs of recovery later this year.

"Demand for certain consumer electronics such as smartphones is weaker than we expected," Tsai said. "As customers remain cautious about future demand, we expect our mobile revenue to be flattish in the second quarter and to improve in the second half."

iPhones, AirPods Replaced With Replicas by E-Commerce Delivery Executive in Gurugram

A delivery executive of an e-commerce firm allegedly stole 10 iPhones by replacing them with dummy phones on the way to deliver them to the customer here, police said on Thursday.

Station in-charge of Matrix Finance Solution, which delivers Amazon's parcel, Ravi in his complaint alleged that on March 27 delivery executive Lalit was handed over a customer's parcel, which contained 10 iPhones and an AirPods, at his address, they said.

However, instead of delivering the parcel, Lalit replaced the iPhones with replicas and sent his brother Manoj to deposit them back to the company claiming that the customer could not be contacted, Ravi said in his complaint.

Suspecting some tampering with the packaging, the parcel was opened and the delivery company found the fake phones inside, police said.

Meanwhile, upon not receiving his parcel, the customer also cancelled his order, they said.

An FIR has been registered against Lalit under sections 420 (cheating), 408 (criminal breach of trust by employee) of the Indian Penal Code at Bilaspur police station on Wednesday, they said.

Efforts are on to nab the accused who is absconding, they said.

Meanwhile, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the deputy minister for information technology, said that the US tech giant Apple could double or triple investments in India, along with exports, over the next few years as the company opened a second store in the world's biggest smartphone market after China.

Apple mainly assembles iPhones in India through Taiwan contract manufacturers but plans to expand into iPads and AirPods, as it looks to cut reliance on China.

Its iPhones made up more than half of total smartphones worth about $9 billion (roughly Rs. 74,000 crore) exported from India between April 2022 and February, data from the India Cellular and Electronics Association shows.

Microsoft, Alphabet, Other AI Companies Urged to Prioritize Security Measures for New Technologies

The chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee on Wednesday urged CEOs of several artificial intelligence (AI) companies to prioritize security measures, combat bias, and responsibly roll out new technologies.

Democratic Senator Mark Warner raised concerns about potential risks posed by AI technology. "Beyond industry commitments, however, it is also clear that some level of regulation is necessary in this field," said Warner, who sent letters to the CEOs of OpenAI, Scale AI, Meta Platforms, Alphabet's Google, Apple, Stability AI, Midjourney, Anthropic, Percipient.ai, and Microsoft.

"With the increasing use of AI across large swaths of our economy, and the possibility for large language models to be steadily integrated into a range of existing systems, from healthcare to finance sectors, I see an urgent need to underscore the importance of putting security at the forefront of your work," Warner said.

Earlier this month, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said he had launched an effort to establish AI rules and address national security and education concerns, as use of programs like ChatGPT becomes widespread.

Schumer, a Democrat, said in a statement he had drafted and circulated a "framework that outlines a new regulatory regime that would prevent potentially catastrophic damage to our country while simultaneously making sure the US advances and leads in this transformative technology."

ChatGPT, an AI program that recently grabbed the public's attention for its ability to write answers quickly to a wide range of queries, in particular has attracted US lawmakers' attention. It has become the fastest-growing consumer application in history with more than 100 million monthly active users.

Microsoft is a big investor in OpenAI, which created ChatGPT. The software company and Google have been pouring billions of dollars into AI to gain an edge amid heightened competition in Silicon Valley.

"When India plans investments in infrastructure and aviation, it also needs smaller aeroplanes. They work very hard on it in Sweden. We see those electric aeroplanes in the developing phase right now, but they will be in the market in just five years. You can have electric flights for domestic shorter short-haul flights from the beginning. They can have a range of 800 kilometres with the 25 passengers combined with electric electricity and biofuel," Mr Carlson said

Snapchat Rolls Out My AI Chatbot Globally; Announces New Features, AR Tools at Snap Partner Summit 2023

Snap, the parent company of Snapchat, held its Snap Partner Summit 2023 on Tuesday (April 19) and introduced a slew of new features and experiences to enhance user experience on the platform. The company has added new options to its signature story formats in the annual event and added fresh Calling Lenses and location-sharing options for the Snap Map. It has also introduced new programmes to assist creators in monetisation and engagement with their audience. Snap is also expanding its AR try-on features that let users use their cameras to virtually try on products. It is also rolling out My AI chatbot running on OpenAI's GPT technology to global markets. The social media company claimed that it has reached over 750 million monthly active users around the world.

At the virtual summit, Snap announced new Calling Lenses that let users appear together in one frame during video calls without any grid. Stories are getting two new options — After Dark and Communities. The former can be used to post late-night events, while the Communities feature lets users share their perspectives with classmates.

The Snap Map is also getting a new location-sharing option with landmarks displayed in 3D. When sharing your live location with a friend, they will see your Bitmoji, aka, a cartoon avatar of yourself. Snapchat claims that more than 1.7 billion Snapchatters show up as their Bitmoji. Additionally, it pointed out that Snapchat has now reached more than 750 million monthly users across the world.

Additionally, with the Stories revenue share programme and Spotlight reward programme, Snapchat is offering new ways for content creators to create income and engage with their audience and compete with Meta-owned Facebook and Instagram. Snapchatters with a minimum of 50,000 followers, 25 million monthly Snap views, and posting at least 10 Stories a month may be eligible to join the Stories revenue share programme. The Spotlight reward programme lets users create and share short videos with users and the company will reward the Top Spotlight Snaps. 

Snapchat is also offering a wider audience for users above the age of 18 years. They would be able to post Public Stories with a tap. Further, with the latest scheduling feature, creators can decide the preferred date and time for their posts. Creators can now add a Linktree to their new Public Profile as well. This could counter the likes of features offered by TikTok and Instagram.

At the summit, Snap revealed its multi-year partnership with American entertainment company Live Nation. It will bring custom AR experiences to 16 of the biggest festivals, including Beyond Wonderland Southern California and Electric Daisy Carnival, the company said.

Snap also announced its integration with live event visualisation company Disguise to offer Snap AR to some of the world's largest venues and tours. "During future shows, fans can see AR visuals through the Snapchat camera that interact with the on-stage visual production, via Disguise RenderStream," it said. Besides this, Snapchat is joining hands with well-known DJ Kygo, to create AR experiences for some of his concerts.

Snapchat is also expanding its Shopping Suite to let users try on clothes and apparel virtually, using Snap's in-house AR Image Processing technology and 3D Viewer. With the Fit Finder functionality, shoppers will be given accurate fit and size recommendations.

Alongside AR shopping experience, Snapchat has introduced AR Mirrors that allow customers to try on products virtually. According to Snap, retail brands like Men's Wearhouse and Nike are currently using AR Mirrors to enhance the in-store experience. Snapchat has also teamed up with Coca-Cola to set up an AR-enabled Coca-Cola vending machine. Customers can control the vending machine with gestures.

Furthermore, Snap at the annual summit announced the launch of new Generative AI Lenses. With this feature, Snapchatters across the globe can transform themselves and the world around them into an animated sci-fi scene through the Cosmic Lens. The app will also give recommendations on Lenses that fit with the context of a photo or video a Snapchatter has captured. A new way to quickly add AR to Memories, Lense recommendations based on Snapchatters' unique preferences are the other new features.

The Santa Monica, California-based company announced the expansion of its experimental My AI chatbot that works on the latest version of OpenAI's GPT technology. The AI chatbot that was unveiled originally in February exclusively for Snapchat+ subscribers, is reaching a global audience now with brand new features.

My AI comes with multiple unique Bitmoji variations where users can design and personalise their own unique Bitmoji for their AI. The chatbot can be bought into conversations with friends by @ mentioning My AI and asking a question on behalf of the group. My AI will surface place recommendations from the Snap Map and suggest relevant Lenses. The community can send Snaps to My AI and receive a chat reply.

Snapchat claims that programming My AI helped it to assess the severity of potentially harmful content and temporarily restricts Snapchatters' access to My AI if they misuse the service. It is also working to incorporate My AI into our in-app parental tool.

SpaceX's Launch for Private Mission to ISS to Be Joined by Saudi Astronauts

Two astronauts from Saudi Arabia, including the first Saudi woman, will blast off from Florida on May 8 on a private mission to the International Space Station (ISS), Axiom Space and NASA officials said Thursday.

Rayyanah Barnawi, a breast cancer researcher, will become the first Saudi woman to voyage into space and will be joined on the mission by fellow Saudi Ali Al-Qarni, a fighter pilot.

Also on board will be Peggy Whitson, a former NASA astronaut who will be making her fourth flight to the ISS, and John Shoffner, a businessman from Tennessee who will serve as pilot.

Liftoff of Axiom Mission 2 (Ax-2) aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket is scheduled for 10:43 pm Eastern Time on May 8 (08:13 am IST on May 9) from the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral, Axiom Space and NASA officials said in a briefing to preview the flight.

The four-member crew will travel to the ISS aboard a SpaceX Dragon capsule and spend 10 days aboard the orbiting space station.

The mission to the ISS will be the second by Axiom Space, a private space company.

Axiom Space carried out its first private astronaut mission to the ISS in April 2022. Four astronauts spent 17 days in orbit as part of Ax-1.

The space mission involving a Saudi woman is the latest move by the kingdom to revamp its ultra-conservative image.

But it is not the oil-rich kingdom's first foray into space.

In 1985, Prince Sultan bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, an air force pilot, took part in a US-organized space voyage.

The neighboring United Arab Emirates has also taken part in space missions and an Emirati astronaut, Sultan al-Neyadi, arrived on the ISS a month ago for a six-month stay.

Used EV Sales Rise in the US Amid Fall in Prices: Report

Used electric vehicle sales in the United States rose 32 percent in the first three months of 2023 as prices fell, data provider Cox Automotive said on Friday.

The group said the average retail listing prices for used EVs was around $43,400 (nearly Rs. 35 lakh), down 4 percent from the same quarter last year and significantly below the average new EV price of about $59,000 (nearly Rs. 48 lakh).

The group said used EV prices were probably cut due to aggressive price reductions by Tesla for new vehicles.

"As the market leader pushes down prices for new EVs, used-vehicle prices follow suit," Cox said.

On Thursday, Tesla cut prices in the United States between 2 percent and nearly 6 percent, the fifth such cut this year. Washington will adopt stricter battery sourcing requirements on April 18 that will limit many EV tax credits.

In the first quarter of 2023, more than 2,25,000 EVs were sold, according to initial estimates by Kelley Blue Book, accounting for approximately 7 percent of new-vehicle sales.

On Monday, General Motors said it sold more than 20,000 EVs in the first three months of the year in the United States, the first time it had done so. EVs accounted for about 3.4 percent of GM first quarter US sales.

In August, Congress created a $4,000 (nearly Rs. 3 lakh) used EV tax credit. Buyers must purchase a used EV for $25,000 (nearly Rs. 20 lakh) or less from a dealer to qualify; the maximum credit is 30 percent percent of the sale price up to $4,000.

Used EV buyers adjusted gross income may not exceed $75,000 (nearly Rs. 61 lakh) for individuals or $150,000 (nearly Rs. 1.22 crore) for joint filers.

Cox Automotive forecast this year sales of new EVs in the United States in 2023 will surpass 1 million units for the first time, up from about 807,000 last year or 5.8 percent of all US sales

Cox said wholesale values of used EVs increased by 3.7 percent year over year, compared to the overall decline of 2.4 percent.

Wikipedia Owner Fined for Failing to Delete Alleged Extremist Content

The Wikimedia Foundation, owner of the online encyclopedia Wikipedia, was fined by a Russian court on Thursday for failing to delete content considered extremist as Moscow pursues a drive to crack down on independent sources of information.

Wikipedia, which says it offers "the second draft of history", is one of the few surviving fact-checked sources of information in Russian since the crackdown intensified after Moscow sent its armed forces into Ukraine in February 2022. 

The Tagansky district court said it had fined Wikimedia RUB 800,000 (nearly Rs. 8 lakh). Russian news agencies in the courtroom said Wikimedia had been charged with failing to remove materials related to a song by the alternative rock band Psychea, or Psyshit, which has been officially designated "extremist".

Russia has now fined Wikimedia around RUB 9 million (nearly Rs. 90 lakh) in the past year, the agencies said. 

Wikimedia did not immediately respond to requests for comment. 

The foundation's Russia chapter has previously said it believes other fines may be overturned, but that the number of cases against it may increase, given the number of articles on Wikipedia about the conflict.

Russia has for years sought to launch a home-grown online encyclopedia, without a tangible result so far.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Tuesday and a Russian analogue was "absolutely necessary".

"It would contain truly verified and accurate information, objective information," he said, "because we know that Wikipedia has many distortions, very many untruths, very many historical, factual and other mistakes."

Russian domestic tech companies, led by entities controlled or associated with the state-owned gas giant Gazprom, have been sensing opportunities in Russia's growing digital isolation as foreign internet firms are blocked or quit Russia. 

But while Moscow has restricted access to Twitter and to Meta Platforms' flagships Facebook and Instagram, Wikipedia remains freely available.

Western Railway Launches Mobile App Yatra to Provide Live Status of Trains

The Western Railway (WR) on Wednesday launched a mobile application that will allow commuters to check the live status of trains on its suburban network spread between Churchgate station in south Mumbai and Dahanu in adjoining Palghar district.

According to the zonal railway, the app, Yatra, also has several other features.

Western Railway general manager Ashok Kumar Misra launched the app at Churchgate station concourse in the presence of railway officials and other dignitaries, Sumit Thakur, chief public relations officer, WR, said in a press release.

The Western Railway has installed GPS tracking devices in all its suburban trains, which will enable the app to provide their real-time location.

Thakur said with this app, developed in collaboration with a private firm, commuters will not only be able to get a train's live location on map, but can also see it moving.

“In just three simple steps, commuters can view the live location. Commuters can find the nearest stations directly on the map, type the source station and track the train of their choice so they can gauge how close or far they are from the train to plan their journey,” he said.

Thakur said commuters will get authentic information regarding train live updates, announcements, latest timetable, maps of major railway stations and their amenities.

The software also provides information about Mumbai Metro services and buses, and it has a section where users can give their feedback.

Passengers will also have an easy access to important railway and medical emergency contact numbers and travellers can use the app to explore nearby tourist destinations and places to visit near stations.

The Western Railway said the the app is divyangjan-friendly as well.

Divyang commuters (persons with disabilities) who operate the mobile phone via voice commands can easily find their train's live location with the help of Google Assistant, Thakur said.

Last July, the Central Railway had launched live tracking of its suburban trains through the app.

EU's Chips Act Said to Get Approval on April 18, Likely to Cut EU's Reliance on US and Asian Semiconductors

The European Union's EUR 43 billion (nearly Rs. 3,84,120 crore) plan to boost its semiconductor industry and catch up with the United States and Asia is likely to get the green light from EU countries and lawmakers on April 18, people with direct knowledge of the matter said on Wednesday.

The European Commission announced the Chips Act last year in a bid to cut EU reliance on US and Asian semiconductors following global supply chain problems that hurt European businesses from carmakers to manufacturers.

The proposed legislation, which aims to double the bloc's share of global chip output to 20 percent over the next decade, came after the United States announced its CHIPS for America Act to compete with Chinese technology.

EU countries and lawmakers will meet at the European Parliament's monthly session in Strasbourg on April 18 to negotiate details of funding for the Act and will likely clinch a deal, the people said.

Discussions have to date focused on a EUR-400-million shortfall, but the EU executive has managed to come up with the bulk of the funds, they said.

While the Commission had originally proposed funding only cutting-edge chip plants, EU governments and lawmakers have expanded the scope to cover the whole value chain, including older chips and research and design facilities, the people said.

Lawmakers had singled out Belgium-based IMEC, a world-leading innovation hub in nanoelectronics and digital technologies and with an ecosystem of more than 600 major industry players, as a key reason for ploughing more funds into EU R&D, they said.

Providing funding to the entire value chain also addresses complaints from the smaller EU countries about being left out after Intel, attracted by the Chips Act, picked Germany for its new mega chip manufacturing complex.

Franco-Italian company STMicroelectronics has also teamed up with GlobalFoundries to build a EUR 6.7 billion (nearly Rs. 59,860 crore) chip factory in France, drawing on funding from the government.
